(BUILT IN) (Icons/Graphics) Mom_Zen_Juggling.jpgSoccer practice, martial arts, PTA, tutor, doctors appointments and work, oh my! How do you keep track of the chaos and run your household without suffering a mental breakdown? With school back in session, it's time to get our fall schedules in order. Having a great family calendar can make a difference in staying on task. I know in today's family, incredibly useful technology exists.  Online Google calendars and PDA's that sync information can make planning a snap. If I didn't have a "smart phone" reminding me of where I need to be, I would miss half of my appointments and obligations.

A lack of "technology awareness," if you will doesn't mean you can't be organized. You can use a wipeoff board with a calendar (at kid's eye level) with different colors for each family member's activities. For some, that will work.  The kids can check what they're doing and parents will know which child they need to shuttle off to practice, tutor, etc.

(BUILT IN) (Icons/Graphics) GarageSale.jpgKeeping clutter under control can also be overwhelming, especially with our kids outgrowing their clothes and shoes every few months. This is a great time of year to clean out closets and get rid of things your kids have outgrown.

  • Parents can use the CVParent.com FREE CLASSIFIEDS to sell their items or to post their garage sales!
  • As you go through your kids' clothing, be sure to visit our Families Giving Back page for ideas of non profits you can support.  Many programs will come to your home to pick up your donations and offer routine pick ups.

(BUILT IN) (Icons/Graphics) Clean_Supplies.jpgCheck out our Household Services to find businesses that can help you; whether you need assistance with Heating & A/C repair or are looking for a handyman to help you with repair projects around the house. Hiring a housekeeper or a gardener to lighten the load can also make a big difference. There are also businesses who can come in and help you back up your photos, files and help your computer operate more efficiently.

Are you starting to plan your fall menus now that the kids are going back to school? Check out the Recipe Club and print out easy and family friendly meals, desserts and crafts. (BUILT IN) (Icons/Graphics) Text_Recipes.jpgYou can also submit your favorites to share with parents

Have a great weekend!

  10 Minute Tidy Tip
- Shannon McGinnis, Author of the 10 Minute Tidy

(BUILT IN) (Icons/Graphics) FirstAidKit.jpgCreate an Organized First Aid Supply Area

Most homes have lots of first aid supplies but rarely are they organized. It's important to have all the necessary supplies should an emergency occur, and being organized will help reduce the stress of any situation. Begin by bringing all the household first aid supplies to one area. Decide where these are to be stored-probably - the ground floor is best, either in the kitchen or bathroom. Next, determine what you are going to keep everything in; then organize your supplies. Be sure to check for expired medicine and medicated bandages. Then group the basics together and let everyone know in your home where the kit is located.

The 10-Minute Tidy, 108 Ways to Organize Your Home Quickly by Shannon McGinnis: Using the proven techniques in The 10-Minute Tidy, you can clear clutter, in just 10 minutes at a time! Have The 10-Minute Tidy become a daily habit and well-recognized phrase in your home. This book has enabled thousands to live in more organized homes and it will show you the way too! 10minutetidy.com

  Idea Jars

~ by WestValleyParent.com

(BUILT IN) (Icons/Graphics) Jar.jpgIdea jars help teach responsibility, family unity, and can be very useful in helping things get accomplished around the house. Take a mayonnaise-sized jar and fill it with strip pieces of paper, each with a "to do" on it. Let the person who has to do the chore select from the jar themselves (usually works best with children ages four and older, but even two-year-olds can learn to chip in around the house - they can dust). These jars can be used once a week or once a month depending on your family's schedule. Just remember that consistency is key for it to be most effective for your family.

Chore Jar Examples

  • Dust (pick one room)
  • Wipe down baseboards
  • Sweep front patio and/or sidewalk
  • Sweep back patio
  • Vacuum
  • Wipe down outside tables and chairs
  • Wipe down fridge / dishwasher
  • Help with laundry
  • Fill up cat and dog food bowls
  • Clean play room
  • Wipe down window sills
  • Clean up outside toys
  • Clean the trash out of the car
  • Wipe down car interior
  • Use glass cleaner on windows / sliding glass doors
  • Clean one bathroom
