Volunteerism. It's a word we hear often but don't always act on. When I was in high school (long ago), there wasn't a community service requirement to graduate but we did have service clubs. Some teens do it just to build their resume but how are we teaching our kids about the heart of volunteerism and all of the causes that need our help? I encourage your teens to find a service oriented club like Interact or Rotaract offered through your local high school in partnership with the Rotary Club. Their motto and commitment is "Service Above Self". We can also attend fundraisers, which many times are really fun. A great example is the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life in Norco this weekend. This signature even raises awareness and funding to fight cancer. It's 24-hours of entertainment, Kids Corner, food, and more. Local cancer survivors walk in the opening lap, and the Luminaria ceremony honors and remembers those who have faced cancer. The Relay for Life is offered in many different cities. I have participated in this event in the past to honor my family and it's very powerful way to show your dedication. Another example would be to find an organization that has a mission that you feel you could align your family with a just dive in, donate your time and service. Participate in the upcoming service projects at your local church.  Yet another way to teach our kids is to participate in the drives conducted in the schools when they are collecting anything from pajamas to school supplies to books. One more way is to let our kids do their own fundraising. Allow your child to pick a cause that is dear to their heart. They can do anything and everything from having lemonade stands and garage sales to selling homemade arts & crafts to raise money and/or awareness for their cause. Lead your children by the example you set and demonstrate to them the power of having a servant's heart. Helping others is a timeless and powerful tool of positive change. Most importantly - Have fun doing this and watch your family grow together!

Name of Nominated Person: Carrie Hernandez. My mom is a good mom because she does lots of things for me. Sometimes she does my dishes for me when I am at school. She gives me a dime an hour when I clean the house. I appreciate what she does for me and I feel what I do for her is not enough compared to what she does for me. Sometimes I want to be the mom for her for at least a week. She could rest and I'll change my brothers diaper and potty train my sister. I'll make dinner and run the errands. I would do anything just for her because she loves me more than I know. I think I know how much she loves me, but I don't. I could guess all my life, but I'll never know. My mom is the best.

Name of Nominated Person: Darcy Hodges. Our mom...our Rock..our foundation of our family! Mom nearly died trying to have the last of us, Ryan. She chose to have each of us and loves us in all we do, we are 9-27 years old. Our mom is the best mom ever and everyone calls her mom who meets her! She is also an amazing grandma of two :)
