January is National Mentoring Month but what does it mean to be a mentor? To be a mentor, you don't need special skills, just an ability to listen and to offer friendship, guidance and encouragement to a young person. And you'll be amazed by how much you'll get out of the experience.

The Mentoring Program at David & Margaret Youth Family Services is designed to match qualified, volunteer mentors with youth who are in foster care or on probation, and under the supervision of Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) DCFS and the Probation Department.

Youth are matched with suitable and responsible adult mentors within the communities where they are placed.

The goals for the Mentoring Program are:

• to improve upon the growth and development for youth in foster care through partnering youth with responsible adult mentors to improve school attendance
• to improve school attendance
• to stabilize the child in foster care in order to reduce replacements
• to raise the level of self-efficacy, create positive values and to empower youth
• to decrease socially and self-destructive behaviors
• to develop supportive networks

We believe that the more frequent the contact between mentor and youth, and the better the quality of the mentoring relationship, the more positive direct effect on the youth's improvement.

As you all know, on the evening of January 12, 2010, a major 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti. It is the most powerful quake to hit the impoverished country in more than 200 years.

Reports describe the destruction to affect as much as 70 percent of the buildings, with debris filling the roads making emergency response difficult. The Prime Minister reported on January 13 that hundreds of thousands of lives may have been lost.
